Still to Come: Piers HX - 40 Turbo and Cam

Cam is in...The new cam has changed the sound of the truck a little bit but the truck runs great and the throttle response with the stock turbo is incredible. The next change I made was switching out the stock exhaust manifold with an ATS manifold.

Hx-40 is in...Turbo lag is back to where the stock HX-35 without the cam, so that worked out good. Top-end pull is awesome compared to the stock turbo.

Hx-40 is out...Blew it up racing a rice burner. Clobbered the guy anyway but it wasn't worth the loss of the turbo. Something went wrong when I used the propane and the truck started to surge and that's when the turbo blew. Definitely my fault. After consulting with Piers from PDR I decided it was time to step up to Twins. (actually it was really my only choice.)

8/16/03

First up on the list to convert to twins is getting the head o-ringed. So the head is off and while I am at it I ported the head also. Also I bought a set of PDR intercooler boots to handle the 65psi that the twins will run at. Going to use a 12v head gasket made to fit my 24v head.

More to come...

9/1/03: The head is done... Here is a pic of the head that I ported. (took about 22hrs.) I didn't have a camera around after I o-ringed it but that is all done and the head is back on the truck.

The head was cut about .020" and I used a .020" over head gasket for a 12v head and ended up about .021" more between the block and the head to help lower the compression a bit.

The TWINS are on... After finally getting all the parts in, it took about 8 hrs. to install them. They came with no directions but was able to figure it out and only had 3 pieces left over. Just kiddin', the pieces are to brace the HT3B turbo which I will do this up coming weekend. I need to take everything back a part anyway to paint it. Right now I'm just driving kind of easy. (running the turbos in a bit) I stepped on it once and blew an intake boot off the front of the HX-40 at about 46 psi. put it back and so far seems fine. All in all it is a great kit. (Piers Diesel Research and Jason from North West Customs)

Well I had a bad day at the track. A five speed and twins are not the hot set-up. Crappy 60ft. times and everything else. So it was decided to switch to an auto. As it turns out Mike from auto-wurks diesel was parting out his race truck so I grabbed his auto and converter. It feels like a new truck. Special thanks to Scott at MassDiesel for letting me use his shop and some guidance on the swap.

I will post these despite the fact that I blew the head gasket the very first pull. So all these runs were with a blown head gasket.

After lifting the head twice, I decided to go with the new Fire Ring set-up. But the week point is still the 12mm head studs. So next mod. is drilling and tapping the block for 14mm studs.
